Zcash Orchard Transactions Paused as Developers Roll Out Protocol Fix

Zcash ecosystem participants are coordinating a network upgrade after an issue was identified in the Orchard shielded pool during routine auditing and security review processes. Zcash Open Development Lab said Orchard-related transactions are temporarily not being mined while the rollout proceeds, but stated that privacy is unaffected and all funds are safe.

Zcash Coordinates Upgrade After Orchard Pool Issue

Zcash Open Development Lab said in an X post that the issue was found over the weekend as part of standard security work and affects only Orchard, Zcash’s latest shielded pool. The group said there was no known exploitation before the issue was identified, and that the matter required a protocol-level change.

“As part of routine auditing and security review processes, an issue affecting the Zcash Orchard pool was identified over the weekend. Orchard-related transactions are not being mined. Privacy is unaffected. All funds are safe,” Zcash Open Development Lab wrote.

The upgrade is being coordinated across developers, infrastructure operators and other independent participants in the Zcash ecosystem. Zcash Open Development Lab said the protocol-level change took effect at 22:30 EDT on June 1, 2026, with Orchard transactions expected to be re-enabled at 14:00 EDT on June 2, 2026, following a status update planned for 10:00 EDT.

Orchard Transactions Paused as Network Rollout Proceeds

The temporary suspension applies only to Orchard pool activity during the upgrade window. Wallet users will be unable to send or receive Orchard funds until the process is complete, while transactions involving the Sapling shielded pool and transparent pools continue to operate.

“To protect Zcash users and the integrity of the network, developers, infrastructure operators, and other independent participants across the Zcash ecosystem have come together to coordinate a protocol update that requires a temporary suspension of Orchard pool activity during the upgrade rollout. Orchard transactions are expected to be re-enabled at 14:00 EDT on June 2, 2026. We will provide a status update at 10:00 EDT,” the post said.

Zcash Open Development Lab also said ZEC held on exchanges is unaffected and can continue to trade normally. The group added that, as part of responsible disclosure, maintainers of other protocols that have deployed Orchard are being notified. “This effort relies on voluntary cooperation among independent participants throughout the network. As part of our responsible disclosure, we are also notifying the maintainers of other protocols that have deployed Orchard. Additional information will be shared when the upgrade is complete,” it wrote.

The immediate operational impact is limited to Orchard transactions, while the broader Zcash network continues processing Sapling and transparent transactions. The coordinated rollout underscores the practical complexity of responding to shielded-pool issues at the protocol level, particularly when action depends on voluntary participation across independent network operators.
