XRP Ledger Nodes Face Upgrade Deadline as Fix Nears

XRP Ledger operators are facing a narrowing upgrade window after the release of rippled version 3.1.3, a reference server update that includes a new amendment carrying fixes for NFTs, Permissioned Domains, Vaults, and the Lending Protocol. Community and engineering figures are urging validators, exchanges, and application infrastructure providers to update quickly before the amendment activates and leaves older nodes unable to communicate with the network.

XRPL Nodes Face Deadline as 3.1.3 Fix Nears

XRP Ledger version 3.1.3 was published on May 14, with XRPL.org describing it as the latest version of rippled, the reference server implementation of the XRP Ledger protocol. The release introduces the fixCleanup3_1_3 amendment, which bundles fixes across several ledger features, including NFTs, Permissioned Domains, Vaults, and the Lending Protocol. Because of the importance of those fixes, the amendment’s default vote is set to “Yes,” and server operators have been told to upgrade “as soon as possible to ensure service continuity.”

Hussein Zangana, Director of Community at the XRP Ledger Foundation and a prominent XRPL validator known online as Vet, said in a May 18 X post that version 3.1.3 had already been available for more than a week and that 40% of the network had upgraded. “The fix amendment in it will be active in 9 days. Every node that hasn’t been updated to 3.1.3 will be unable to communicate to the network. While we been working with exchanges to inform and verify that they updated – please let projects you love using e.g DEX interface / NFT Marketplace on the XRP Ledger know to update to 3.1.3 within the next 9 days.”

By early May 19, J. Ayo Akinyele, Head of Engineering at RippleX, said the upgrade rate had improved to 44%. “Now 44% of the XRPL network has upgraded to v3.1.3! If you’re running a node to support the network, please upgrade ASAP. Only 8 days left before the fix amendment activates – don’t be left out!” The timing implies the amendment activation window is approaching quickly, making the upgrade relevant not only for validators but also for public infrastructure, exchanges, wallets, indexers, marketplaces, and trading interfaces that depend on reliable XRPL connectivity.

Exchanges and Projects Urged to Update Servers

The 3.1.3 release includes a series of changes intended to clean up edge cases and enforce invariants across newer XRPL functionality. XRPL.org says the amendment fixes an issue where expired NFTokenOffer entries remained on the ledger, adds a safeguard to ensure Permissioned Domains are not modified by failed transactions, corrects trust line token limit checks during vault withdrawals, and improves loan accounting when loans are defaulted, impaired, or unimpaired. The release also changes one Lending Protocol error response, strengthens LoanBroker invariant checks, and adds a verify_endpoints configuration parameter for local peer network development, which XRPL.org says should not be disabled on Mainnet.

Zangana said outreach to exchanges was already underway, and the community push has expanded to projects operating user-facing XRPL services. “This week is the hot week! We contacted all popular exchanges as well to checkout the update, many responded already. Will followup to confirm they are in the know about the update.” Akinyele responded that the outreach was welcome and added, “That’s great. Thank you! Hoping we get closer to 75-80% in the next few days.”

The upgrade discussion has also revived debate over how much inactive or poorly maintained node infrastructure should matter to the network. Daniel Keller, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Eminence, argued that not every outdated node is necessarily critical infrastructure. “The only question is: how many of them actually matter to XRPL operations? How many are abandoned? How many would just update a few hours late?” He added, “Decentralisation does not mean dead weight gets carried. Running a node is a responsibility, not a participation trophy. If you can’t maintain infrastructure, you should get filtered out. That is network hygiene.”

For XRPL operators, the immediate issue is operational rather than theoretical: version 3.1.3 is live, the amendment is nearing activation, and nodes that remain on older software risk losing communication with the network once the fix goes active. The public messaging from XRPL community and RippleX engineering figures is aimed at reducing that risk before it affects exchanges, marketplaces, DEX interfaces, or other infrastructure users depend on.
